What is 5G4Rail?
5G4Rail is investigating how the 5G mobile communications standard can replace the existing GSM-R system in the railway sector and be used for future applications such as autonomous driving.
Why is this important?
– GSM-R was originally due to be phased out by 2030, but was extended again
– Higher bandwidth required for fully digitalised control and safety technology
– Powerful and reliable wireless communication as a basis
Project goals:
– Selection of specific use cases
– Development of measurement and test scenarios
The project can create a basis for modern, high-performance railway communication. It’s exciting to see how 5G will revolutionise the railways!
